Celebrating Women In Pizza

Women In Pizza Recorded evidence of women in the pizza industry goes back centuries. Did you know that in 1889 pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito actually made three pizzas in honor of King Umberto di Savoia and his wife Queen Margherita? While Raffaele made the Marinara and the earlier Mastunicola recipes, it was his wife who added the mozzarella and basil to make the pizza represent the Italian flag (red, white, and green) colors and it was then that the Pizza Margherita was born!   Both the King and Queen approved of the pizza, and Raffaele Esposito’s wife’s famous recipe became emblematic of not only pizza but of Naples itself.

One of our favorite modern movements is Women in Pizza, a movement that empowers women in the pizza industry to share their stories, display their talents, inspire innovations, and connect with one another and the world. Their contribution to the pizza community has and will continue to be vital to the advancement of the pizza industry and the intangible way pizza brings people together.

It all began with pizza on wheels, Big Bon’s firstborn child. Bringing special events, Neapolitan style pizza, and wood-fired yum-yum in and around Savannah Georgia. BIG BON PIZZA has catered over 300 weddings, corporate events, birthday parties, graduations, you name it they’ve probably driven their custom-made pizza oven to it.

Pooleside Pies, Chef Ashley Christensen

Featured in our “Fired Up Restaurants” post, this Neapolitan-inspired “pizza joint” by James Beard Award winner Ashley Christensen offers a one-of-a-kind Chef-forward pizza concept.  Her spin on pizza, starters, spritzes, and desserts are a culinary journey just begging to be embarked upon!. From Crispy Pork Belly topped pizza to Crudite “tonnato” salad and Buttermilk Bomboloni – their menu is as cool as the concept itself.

According to this Edible Queens article: “There’s a constant pizza party going on in Nicole Russell’s Arverne home kitchen. She’s slinging inventive rounds that have won the admiration of the most renowned experts in the city, such as Scott Weiner from Scott’s Pizza Tours and “A Slice A Day’s” Adam Kuban.”

Dubbed “The Pizzaiola Changing the Face of Pizza”, Laura Meyer has won both the World Pizza Championship in pan pizza in 2013 in Parma, Italy, and the 2014 International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas for non-traditional pizza.
